The Messy Middle: Why Not Everything in Internal Podcasts Needs to Be Polished
There’s a certain temptation in internal communication to make everything neat, scripted, and polished. We’ve grown used to perfect slide decks, carefully worded emails, and corporate videos where not a single word is off-message. And while that level of control may work for brand campaigns or investor updates, it often misses the mark when it comes to building trust with employees.
Because real connection? It’s rarely polished.
One of the most unexpected joys of internal podcasting is what we like to call "the messy middle." That space between question and answer where people hesitate, laugh, stumble, or shift their thoughts mid-sentence. It’s not always tidy—but it’s always real.
Employees are far more likely to connect with a voice that sounds like theirs than one that feels rehearsed or distant. A podcast guest who admits they were nervous to try something new, or a host who fumbles a question and laughs it off, signals something powerful: vulnerability is welcome here.
We’ve seen this in action. A leader sharing a story that wasn’t perfectly crafted—but was heartfelt. A frontline employee pausing to find the right word, only to land on something deeply moving. These moments would never survive a rigid script. But in the podcast space, they shine.
When you allow space for imperfection, you also make space for authenticity. And that authenticity is what builds trust, especially in large or complex organizations where employees often feel disconnected from leadership or from each other.
This doesn’t mean internal podcasts shouldn’t have structure. Of course they should. But structure isn’t the same as perfection. A well-prepared episode with room for spontaneity is far more powerful than one that’s over-edited into blandness.
The truth is, employees don’t want to hear another version of the company newsletter in audio form. They want to hear each other. They want stories. Voices. Emotions. That’s what they’ll remember—and that’s what will make them hit play again next time.
At The Community Studio, we guide our clients through the process of finding this balance—between clarity and honesty, preparation and presence. And every time we lean into the messy middle, we’re reminded: this is where the magic happens.
